The match

The final match of Wednesday’s World Cup action sees Belgium and Canada facing off for this Group F clash at the Al-Rayyan Stadium in what looks to have the potential for an exciting match. Belgium enter this tournament as the #2 FIFA ranked team and will be competing in their 14th World Cup finals. However, a 2-1 loss to Egypt in Belgium’s only warm-up match now makes it two consecutive losses for the Red Devils. Their opponents, Canada, are only making their second ever appearance on the big stage and first since 1986 where they suffered the ignominy of failing to net a single goal or point. However, there is cause for much optimism this time around for the Canadians, who possess a number of exciting young talents that have the potential to cause this aging Belgium defense problems. Canada comes into this tournament off the back of an excellent display in a 2-1 win against Japan, giving the Maple Leafs a 2-1-1 record in their five warm-up matches.

Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies and LOSC Lille’s Johnathan David will be the two players to watch for Canada and will be expected to shoulder the majority of the attacking load. Expect John Herdman's team to attempt to keep a compact defensive shape and hit this Belgium side on the counter using the pace of the aforementioned duo.

This will be Canada’s biggest group stage test. They will know that if they can steal a point off the heavily favored Belgians they will be in a great position to qualify with matches against Croatia and Morocco still to come. Belgium are sure to provide stern opposition as the aging golden generation eyes perhaps its final chance to lift the World Cup trophy. The Red Devils will have to make due without all-time record goalscorer Romelu Lukaku, as the on loan Inter striker works his way towards full fitness with an eye on Belgium’s second group stage match against Morocco as a possible return date.

Fortunately for Belgium, they are not without a lack of attacking options. Michy Batshuayi is expected to deputize in Lukaku’s wake and will be supported by the likes of Eden Hazard, Yannick Carrasco and the unparalleled Kevin de Bruyne who will provide the creative spark from midfield.

The bet of our experts

We’re going to back both teams to score as our bet for this match. This Canadian team is certainly capable of springing a surprise on Belgium and should at least be able to find the net against a shaky Red Devil defense. Expect Belgium to control most of the possession and find a way through at some point due to the sheer amount of attacking quality in the side. This should be a fun one in a match that looks poised to be an attacking showcase.
