France vs Poland Match Preview

The match

France will hope to take the next big step in the defence of their world title when they face Poland in the Round of 16 on Sunday. Both nations will be hoping to recover from losing their final group matches. France lost 1-0 to Tunisia in their final Group D game but even as they went into the game they had already secured qualification after two opening wins. As a result of thts their manager Didier Deschamps rested most of his top players for the Tunisia game and they lacked their usual rhythm. They only regained it when he introduced a number of them as Les Bleus chased the game. With that defeat France’s nine-game unbeaten run in World Cup matches came to an end and it was also the third time they had failed to score in the last 10 matches. Also, France haven't been the meanest in defence with no clean sheets in their last four matches. However, they rarely concede more than a goal in their games; that has happened in just one of their last eight matches. France have scored two or more goals in three of their last five matches but three of the last five have as well ended in under 2.5 goals. Kylian Mbappe was among players named on the bench for the loss to Tunisia and we will expect him to start here. The PSG forward has scored seven times in the last 10 matches for France and will be a hot favorite to score here.

Poland labored through their final group game against Argentina, losing 2-0 but just about managing to squeeze through to this stage. They were subdued by Argentina and that is a glimpse of what they can expect in the France game. Conceding just two goals from Argentina’s 23 shots in the game and goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny saving a Lionel Messi penalty was somewhat a revelation that their defence can hold. If it can hold for two straight matches against top teams will be answered on Sunday though. As a team, Poland goes into this game with three wins on the last five matches, and the loss to Argentina is their only defeat in the five games. Poland can claim to be astute defensively but the test against France will be sterner than what they have faced in the recent matches. They have four clean sheets in the last five games and their last seven matches have all produced under 2.5 goals. their main man, Robert Lewandowski was isolated for the better part of the loss to Argentina and their hope will be that he can squeeze through here and add to his one World Cup goal.

The bet of our experts

Poland have another tough opponent to contend with; they advanced to this stage after only managing four points in their group and here they will be under pressure, facing one of the top favorites in this competition. France will have the advantage of being able to field rested players after securing qualification much earlier. This is not a comfort to be enjoyed by Poland and the Poles will suffer in trying to deal with Kylian Mbappe’s speed. France have the edge here and being favorites, we will back Mbappe as anytime goal scorer, to spice things up.
