USA vs Wales Match Preview

The match

It's farewell to a statistic that has plagued Welsh football for decades. Wales take on the USA in Group B of the 2022 World Cup. The other two countries in this group are England and Iran. No more will the Welsh have to hear that they haven't qualified for the World Cup finals since 1958. They had to go through the play-offs to qualify but they finally made it to the finals. It might have been a different story if those play-off fixtures hadn't been played at home. Wins came against Austria and Ukraine to reach the promised land. Their form since qualifying for Qatar has not been good. Like England, the Welsh have been relegated from the Nations League. They'll be in League B for the next tournament.

Wales come into this World Cup having lost four of their last five matches. The other was a creditable 1-1 home draw with Belgium. A repeat of that performance could see them go well in this group. Only one of their last five away matches has been won. That was a 1-0 win in Estonia in October 2021. All three away matches played in 2022 have ended in defeat with seven goals conceded. Wales had scored in 12 consecutive internationals before a goalless draw in Poland. Both teams have scored in nine of their last 11 matches. Joe Allen is still an injury doubt for this game. The good news though is that both Bale and Ramsey are fit. Wales have only had two previous matches against the USA. There was a 2-0 away defeat in 2003 and two years ago they were held to a goalless draw at home. This is the first competitive fixture between the two countries.

The USA are back in the World Cup finals after missing out four years ago. They finished third in their qualifying group to earn automatic qualification. It was tight though and totaly because of their poor away record. The USA won six of their seven home World Cup qualifiers. However, on the road their only win was away at Honduras who finished bottom of the group without a win. The other six away USA matches saw them earn just two points and score just one goal.

Their problems on the road have continued with only draws being achieved against El Salvador and Saudi Arabia. September also saw them be beaten 2-0 by Japan in a match played in Germany. The Americans do have several players who are familiar to English Premier League fans. Their top scorer is Christian Pulisic who plays for Chelsea and two of their defenders (Ream and Robinson) play for Fulham. They will need to improve their away form if wanting to get out of this group. Go for both teams to score in this match.

Key Statistics

Both teams have scored in nine of the last 11 Welsh internationals.

Wales have scored in 12 of their last 13 games.

Wales have scored in each of their last six away games.

The USA have conceded in three of their last four away matches.

The bet of our experts

Wales face USA in their first World Cup finals match since 1958. Their fans might remind you that 64 years ago the quarter finals were reached. Wales have performed well in recent European Championships and got out of their group in the last two held. They certainly aren''t in Qatar to just make up the numbers. One slight worry is that the importance of this occasion might be too emotional for them. That experience in the European Championships should help prevent that.

The USA will want to do well in Qatar as they are one of the co-hosts in 2026. It is a worry for them though that they just don't seem to play well away from home. They even celebrated World Cup qualification after being beaten in Costa Rica. The Americans do have some talented players but they need to put on a solid performance outside of the USA. Up against a Welsh side that regularly scores but also concede plenty of goals, a bet on both teams to score can be a winner.
